Leading Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox is taking nothing for granted as the race for Olympic spots goes down to the wire.

Fox, who is ranked 190 in the world, is in a head to head battle with Michael Hendry [207 in world] to join Danny Lee in the New Zealand men's contingent for next month's Rio Olympics.

Both golfers compete in their final ranking events this weekend before the cut-off for selection on Monday.

Ryan Fox can seal an Olympic berth with a strong effort in Slovakia this week.

The two highest ranked New Zealand men's golfers in the world rankings will make the cut for Rio.

New Zealand No 1 Danny Lee is ranked 48th in the world, meaning his place in the Olympics team is assured.

Lydia Ko will lead the way on the women's side for New Zealand with Liv Cheng in contention to join her.

Fox is competing in the Slovakia Challenge on the Challenge Tour in Europe, while Hendry is at the Japan PGA Championship on the Japan Tour.

Hendry could potentially overtake Fox if he performs strongly in Japan and Fox falters.

"It really depends on how Mike goes this week, there are a few more ranking points in Japan than on the Challenge tour and if he wins and he's been playing well for a month, then I think I am in a little bit of trouble for the Olympics," Fox told Radio Sport.

"If I win and Mike doesn't obviously I will cement my place to go. I have luxury if I make the cut of knowing what I have to do."

Should Fox be selected, he will travel to London next week for the necessary vaccination shots and medical tests.

Fox was feeling positive leading into this weekend's Slovakia Challenge.

He played a practice round at the Penati Resort course in Senica and said it was one, which suited him.

Fox enters with plenty of confidence, having finished second at the latest European Challenge Tour event in Scotland last week.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed course features a massive par-six 720m hole.

Fox said it was a slightly easier version of another Nicklaus designed course, Kinloch in Taupo.

"There are lots of bowls on the greens and different levels. If you don't hit it to the right level it can be very difficult."
